Enalan

Fort Lauderdale at sunsetEnalan Communications, Inc., is a Fort Lauderdale, Florida based-company providing health care information services to consumers and companies that focus on health care information delivery. We provide publishing services for authors and consultation on web site and text design.

A principal in the company is Dr. Ray Ownby, formerly Professor at the University of Miami and now engaged in editorial and development work with Enalan. Dr. Ownby is the author of numerous works on memory and cognition in older adults, and in the effects that cognitive changes have on users' interactions with information. Dr. Ownby assists in consultation on how older adults interact with web sites and other technological devices. Enalan also provides consultation on health literacy interventions and technologies that support them. We support an alpha version of a tailored information intervention aimed at improving older adults' medication adherence, the initial development of which was supported by a grant to Dr. Ownby from the National Institute on Aging. We are in the process of refining it and deploying it in another NIH-supported study, this time supported by the National Institute of Mental Health.

Health Literacy

Health literacy is defined as the ability to understand health information and apply it to help you become more health. Studies, including one of our own, have shown that the majority of websites are written in a way that make them hard for users to understand. Adjusting to users' health literacy needs is an important aspect of usability.

Web Usability

Web usability is the quality of web sites that makes you either love them, and think they're easy to use, or hate them and think they're difficult. Usability is important for all websites, but it's especially important if your website targets users aged 40 or older. Our research has shown that there are ways to make websites easier for adults over 40 to use. A bonus is that if you make a site easier for older people to use, it's also going to be easier for younger people to use. Consultation with us can help you spot problem areas for the users you want to attract and make your site easier for them to use.
